Unrequited Love's Sweet Lament (Sonnet)

In shadows' guise, the myth of breakup lingers,
Thou claimeth mutual parting, sweet deceit,
Yet truth unveileth stark, thy fleeting fingers,
Didst leave my heart, a wound so bittersweet.

Thou speaketh of regret to mask thy choice,
To soothe thy conscience, mend thy wounded pride,
Yet I, in steadfastness, didst raise my voice,
And stood by thee through tempest's cruel tide.

I marked thy dates upon the calendar's page,
And lent mine ear to every rant and plea,
With love and patience, I didst engage,
In mood swings and thy anger, I held thee.

So tell me, dearest, in this mournful plea,
Why not me? Why not me, sweet destiny?
